West Valley Gymnastics School - Our History Welcome to West Valley Gymnastics School. We would like you to become better acquainted with us, so read on for a little history of our gym... West Valley has been under the ownership of 1996 Olympic coach, Mark Young, since 1981. Originally we were located about a half mile down the road. We moved to our current location in 1987, and added to our building in 1994, and again in 1999. Through the years, WVGS has achieved many things, not least of which is the feat of introducing the wonderful sport of gymnastics to thousands of children. Also notable are the scholarships that we have helped our students gain at many of the finest Universities around the country, including such colleges as Berkeley and Stanford University. West Valley was first represented internationally by Amy Chow, in Mexico at the Mexican Olympic Festival of 1991, when Amy was 13 years old. She was a member of the 1994 World Champion Team in Dortmund, Germany, which earned the Silver medal and was the first time USA beat Russia in the history of the sport. In 1995 Amy won the All-Around Title, beating reigning Champion Dominique Dawes at the Budget Meet, where the US competed against Ukraine, and won! Amy has been selected for two World Championships since then, and of course was a member of the team that became known as "The Magnificent Seven" in the Olympic Games of 1996. There, Amy, under the tutelage of Mark Young and Diane Amos, won both the Team Gold and the Silver medal for uneven bars, despite never having been National Bars Champion in the US. At Championships of the USA 2000, Amy became the US National Balance Beam Champion. In Boston, at Olympic trials, Amy won her place on the 6 person team chosen to represent the U.S.A. at the Summer Olympic Games 2000. Amy helped the team to 4th place, and at the All Around event she placed 15th in the World! Our program has continued to grow and expand providing the South Bay community with recreational and competitive gymnastics of the highest quality and standard. |
